Job Description

The YNHHS Director of Spiritual Care provides visionary leadership and oversight of YNHHS care signature in all aspects pertaining to spiritual care, specifically at significant touch points of a patients experience in accordance with high quality and professional chaplaincy practice. As part of the YNHHS administrative team, the System Director of Spiritual Care will educate and advocate for the provision of culturally and spiritually sensitive services in a shifting social environment. Collaborate with Hospital, Health System, and community leadership to achieve the YNHHS strategic vision, mission, and goals of the organization. Responsible for system oversight and developing visionary strategies for the Department of Spiritual Care for Yale New Haven Health System. The Director serves as a role model and coach for staff and a liaison between patients, patient families, visitors, hospital staff and medical staff across all delivery networks.

  • 1. Directs the spiritual care departments across the Health System.
  • 2. Develops visionary strategies for spiritual care across the Health System.
  • 3. Assure excellence in the delivery of the spiritual care signature for all patients, family members and staff through attention to and use of best practice, including the standardization of practice and policy.
  • 4. Seek patient/family feedback to identify and fill gaps in the patient's spiritual and religious experience.
  • 5. Develops system policies and procedures, establishes communication plans and serves as a manager resource.
  • 6. Works in collaboration with managers to coordinate, write publish, and distribute policies and procedures consistently across sites and delivery networks.
  • 7. Elevate the expertise of chaplains throughout YNHHS through the standardization of training and credentialing.
  • 8. Oversee the provision of crisis care to employees and departments and collaborate with relevant departments to support employee wellness.
  • 9. Provide creative leadership to the development of innovative Clinical Pastoral Educational programming at YNHHS; maintain accreditation per the standards of The Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
  • 10. Coordinate and standardize performance metrics; identify and drive improvement strategies based on analysis and best practice in the field.
  • 11. Develop strategic approaches to involve and train all disciplines in the delivery, availability, and appropriateness of spiritual care.
  • 12. Work with interdepartmental entities and patient experience colleagues to identify gaps in patients? spiritual care needs. Lead in the development and implementation of comprehensive strategic solutions.
  • 13. Provide administrative oversight and support for all Departments of Spiritual Care including human resource management, managing funds, monitoring budget performance and advocating for the specific needs of departments at each delivery network.
  • 14. Collaborate with the system and all delivery network leadership teams and departments to drive strategy and maintain focus on providing exceptional spiritual care - meaning-making, purpose, connection, and care for the human spirit.
  • 15. Responsible for monitoring industry best practices and formulating innovative ways to adopt strategies based on patient needs.
  • 16. Motivate and mentor team members and cultivate a positive environment through managing results, developing staff, and maintaining an in-depth knowledge of YNHHS/ products, services, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • 17. Manages the annual spiritual care budget and resources. Allocates resources (budget and staffing) efficiently and effectively for all experience initiatives.
  • 18. Coordinate innovations and advocate for system wide integrations to drive excellent experience, including branded experiences, service offerings and further opportunity identification.
  • 19. Monitor national and industry best practices and trends and tailor strategies to ensure we perform as a best-in-class patient experience institution.
  • 20. Develop standardized training, practices, and education for all.
  • 21. Mentor and coach management staff on performance.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION


Bachelor's degree and Graduate Theology Degree (Master of Divinity or its equivalent)


EXPERIENCE


5 to 10 years of hospital chaplaincy experience including: direct spiritual care of the sick and their caregivers, direct responsibility for clinical pastoral education, and some intra- and inter departmental administrative experience.


LICENSURE


Ordination or certification in Religious Vocation; endorsement for institutional ministry by ecclesiastical authority; board certification as a professional chaplain (by APC, NACC or NAJC); certification as a ACPE Certified Educator by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education National Faculty and experience supervising CECs preferred.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Demonstrated emotional and spiritual maturity sufficient for to provide leadership in complex multi-disciplinary and multi-faith tertiary care clinical settings.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Flexibility in coping with shifting demands on time and energy. Must be able to travel to all delivery care networks.
